Why Updating for Peak Times is Dumb Part 2: Considering Edgerank

by rangersanger

The people who are most likely to share are also most likely to have a very active Edgerank filter because they have so many data points for it to consider. These are the power users, they are the most active users of Facebook. They spend the most time there, have the largest networks and create the most objects.  Knowing this we can be sure that unless our user is interacting with our brand on a regular basis, posting at a time when all of his friends are also most likely to post is a good way to have our post filtered by Edgerank. Yet another reason why scheduling to post at peak times on Facebook is a bad idea.

Knowing that our power user is more likely to be active at non-peak times allows us to get around Edgerank because the power user is also more likely to click over to top news. When our story is the only new story in his or her news feed it will attract more attention. Even if the power user does not click over to top news, by posting at a non peak time the user is far more likely to have our object show up in his news feed. This is primarily due to the freshness of the object. Since there are fewer other objects being generated at non peak times, our object has less to compete with.

Since the power users are the users who are most likely to share and disseminate our object it clearly makes the most sense to post at off peak times. A share by a power user is going to spread an object much further and much deeper than a post generated by your app or an object published on a page. So, I say post at 10 PM, post at 8 AM, post at 2 AM. People at those times will be staved for a story. This is the same reason CNN and FOX run on a 24 hour cycle. The 5 O’Clock news just didn’t cut it for their power users.
