How to Write Content for Your Blog or Facebook Page

Groupon's front page.

These folks know what they are doing, both with fuzzy accounting and writing good blurbs.

Having a voice is perhaps the most important element of social media marketing. It’s one that I myself am guilty of often missing. Years of academia beat it out of me and I’m just now managing to work humor back into my writing and lay off the $10 words. Let me know how I’m doing, eh?

This is the number one reason I promote social media for small business owners. More often than not the company itself is a reflection of the owner. Through the brand and the company culture, the owners personality traits shine through. It’s why I promoted bringing your employees into the content creation process. Social media is about being social and it’s hard to be social with a robot.

This is one of the reasons Groupon has been so successful (or not, depending on what you think of their designation of customer acquisition costs as a capital investment) If you’ve ever read one of their daily emails, you’ll see that they are oozing with personality. From self-deprecating to absurdly irreverent Groupon’s daily emails are sure to make you at least look twice.

So, if you’re writing your Facebook status updates using the AP Style Guide, it may be time to rethink your tactics. Instead, take a page out of Groupon’s style manual. Or all of them. Here it is for your review, Groupon’s Editorial Manual it even goes over humor taboos, something that gets even the most well intentioned writer in trouble once in a while.
